Challenge

Nationwide approached the Apple + IBM partnership to reimagine how high-stakes presentations could be created, prepared and delivered. They needed an edge in the way they conveyed important information tailored to government agencies and public sector board members. Whether inking a new business deal or renewing the relationship with these organizations, Nationwide’s goal is to be the leading and primary workplace and employee benefits provider which could mean multi-million dollar contracts. Beyond a “pretty” Powerpoint or Keynote presentation, they wanted to stand out in a crowded and competitive setting.

Process

We engaged the users in a 3-day design thinking workshop at the Apple Enterprise Design Center in Cupertino, California to work together in this proof of concept. Users told us they wanted a way to share information on-the-fly as they were presenting data to their audience. Each member would have iPads and before the presentation, would be able to log in and choose a category of interests. This would tailor the experience and types of content that could be made tappable and available to them as the presenter walked them through the presentation.

This uncovered a need for a smart content management system where the presenter would have a bank of slides, graphics and documents that could address different questions and concerns.

We designed an innovative iPad Pro experience that engaged presenters and audience members in a more personalized way. Leveraging Apple resources, we implemented a multipeer framework that allows up to 12 iPads to have one-to-one connectivity. This allowed the presenter to control what the members are viewing as they go through the slides. Also, the app allows members to interact with short, secondary content that provides them with a more rich experience and sends real-time feedback to the presenter.

Then, as the presenter receives non-intrusive notifications on audience engagement and topics, they are then able to proactively address those points and even insert supplemental slides on the fly that help further close the sale. We also helped the client visualize how they could use the app by reimagining their own design materials.

Results

As a team, we helped reimagine how presentations could be supercharged. We explored new technologies and gave Nationwide a proof of concept that served for further discussions in their own research and development division.
